About
Excavations at the site of Sangtarashan, Khorramabad yielded over 400 bronze artifacts, examples of the mid-first millennium metallurgy Archaeologically, these artifacts were discovered in an extremely unusual context: neither in a mortuary or a domestic context, nor in association with any other material culture or in an archaeological deposit. They were simply a hoard of bronze of artifacts left on the ground. Insight into the nature and function of this collection therefore seem to call for an approach other than those commonly used in archaeology. In this dissertation, the author proposes to use a theoretical approach based on semiology and iconography in conjunction with historical research, historical geography, and art historical analyses in the study of this unusual collection.
